这里面唱到的老树，指的是片中的一种叫做“海马”的植物。它吞噬记忆而生。这里的记忆，其实和人的灵魂一样。因为人如果失去了记忆，也就失去了曾经存在的证明，变成一张完全的白纸。 在这个星球上，很久以前由老国王统治。国王有七个儿子，最小的名叫warp。他们一直相处得很好。然而加冕仪式来临之际，一切却都变了，最终发生了皇位争夺。 王后给自己的儿子warp送来“毒药”，但是warp喝了之后却没有死。他的身体不会受到外界损伤，只会从内部损坏，但喝了“毒药”却没有死。结果所有人都在斗争中被杀，只有warp活了下来，并成为了国王，统治了全部人类。 warp的生命十分长久，见证了几千年来发生的一切，也就是记忆了一切。他发明了记忆罐来储存物质化了的记忆，记忆提取和转移的技术大约也在这一时期成熟。 warp的物质化记忆形成了星球周围的小行星， 海马就来吞噬这些记忆。warp打败了海马，使得这些植物沦为边远行星上的小草。这些事迹被刻成巨型浮雕，至今仍留在地面的宫殿遗迹里。 这颗星球上的贫富分化越来越严重，富人们建起高塔居住在顶端，最终形成了围着星球的一个大壳。上界的人为了统治下界的人，制造了电解云横亘上下届之间，试图通过电解云的人就会失忆，身体受损，不得不回到下界。人的身体终会衰老，为了防止这一现象的发生，上界人夺取或买卖下界人的身体，利用记忆罐chip来转移记忆，从而获得新生。 为了防止warp有一天会死去，王国克隆了许多warp，但是没有一个继承他不受外界损伤的能力。这些克隆人成了warp的附庸，只有在他不在时才能偶尔从培养囊中出来充当王的角色。他们对warp怀恨在心。三个warp克隆的失败品在下界建立了半宗教团体“一想团”，旨在煽动下界的人们反抗记忆剥削，打倒warp。 年幼的popo是下界贫穷人们中的一个。他和母亲相依为命，母亲为了救他把自己的身体卖掉，给他买了健康的身体。他和青梅竹马的neiro、cheki加入一想团，和她们发下将来要做国王的宏愿。 有一天，warp在飞行，大约是在穿越电解云时遇到不测，一头撞上了下界的建筑物。他把墙面砸出一个大洞，自己却安然无恙，只是失去了记忆。neiro救了他，并且对他悉心照料。两人在相处中日渐生情。由于他在失忆时对neiro展示了惊人的记忆力，neiro便以传说中植物海马的名字kaiba为他命名。 warp克隆的失败品也注意到了他，但不敢公布事实，想用毒酒害死他，结果毒酒被neiro弄洒。他们又想在古代宫殿的遗迹中杀死他，没想到再次被他逃脱，而且还让他想起了自己的身份。其他人也在遗迹中发现warp的肖像，认出了眼前的kaiba就是warp，warp逃走，回到上界。 一想团命令neiro到上界去杀死warp，他们告诉neiro，warp一定会忘记旧情并且抛弃她，只有一想团才是她的归宿。neiro见到warp之后，要求他带她进入宫殿，却在warp将要喝下毒酒之时后悔，打翻了酒杯。之后neiro被警卫发现并融解，warp收集了她的记忆，在培养囊中为她重造了身体。得知warp的身世之后，neiro决心为他查出真相。 最后neiro发现了一个很重要却一直被忽略的事实。她高兴地拉着warp到资料室，却被warp的一个克隆人暗算。原来他在warp不在的时候代为从政， 不甘心在warp回来之后一直呆在培养囊里，就发动了叛变。他把warp和neiro丢到下界，自己当起了国王。 原以为是路人甲保安怪蜀薯最后竟然迎来了自己的一场大义牺牲，想不到。最后两集候了很长时间才看掉，因为看掉就没了。近年来难得有胸有脑有型的TVA动画，配乐更是出色的紧，OST反复地听也听不厌。另，关于森本晃司汤浅政明之流的动画我可以称之为日本新浪潮动画吗？

那因为被砍而临时收尾的两集依旧透露着强大的功底，但与之前那番对灵魂与躯体、现实与记忆、普通民众与统治阶级的深刻探讨相比就显得太过平庸，这真是种遗憾。

（8/10）有点成人版《小王子》+《攻壳》+《盗梦空间》的赶脚（这片比《盗梦空间》早前两年上映）。喜欢前半部的公路片风格，最后一集有点玩脱了，而且很多设定都没用上……（据说这片预定26集，所以前9集一直不慌不忙地讲故事，然后突然宣布腰斩，才有了最后的仓促结局……）

画风虽萌怪，世界观相当广博深刻，当中几个独立型的支线小故事最为好看，天马行空的肆意想象挡不住源源的悲伤；肉身可以置换或丢弃，记忆可以抽取或废除，可是在记忆迷宫的深处永远藏着关于你的点滴，仿佛经过了几生几世的轮回劫难，还能找到彼此。

音乐同样很美

《海馬》（日語：カイバ）是一部日本電視動畫原創作品。2008年4月到7月於WOWOW上放映。全12話。作品名稱「海馬」引自與腦器官相關的「海馬體」。與湯淺政明的前作一樣，畫風以及人物設計與手塚治虫相近。
第12回日本文化廳媒體藝術祭動畫部門優秀賞作品。
作品簡介[編輯]
由於記憶可以被儲存，肉體的死亡不再具有意義。由於記憶可以在不同身體中轉移，發生許多社會現象，像是記憶的買賣、違法的記憶改造、偷取他人的記憶。社會混亂，進步停滯。喪失的自己記憶的主角凱巴在這樣的社會裡尋找自己原來的記憶。

EditSynopsisIn a world where memories exist in memory chips separate from the body, death of the body no longer means death of the soul. It is possible for memories to be viewed, altered, and transferred between bodies. These memory chips are used by the rich to obtain eternal lives in carefully selected bodies, while for the poor, selling their own bodies and conserving their souls in the chips often become the only way to earn a living. An electrolytic cloud in the sky serves as a barrier between the heavens of the fortunate and the underworld of the destitute, making this social division impregnable.
One day, a man named Kaiba wakes up in an empty room with no memories, a mysterious hole in his chest, and a locket holding the picture of an unknown woman. After escaping an attack and stumbling upon a decrepit village of underworld residents, he begins his adventure across the different planets of this strange universe to find out more about his own identity and the woman he once knew.
Through a journey of self-discovery and acceptance, Kaiba weaves together tales of souls and spirits and explores the importance of memories.

Story: 9 (Great amnesia story, love the sci-fi elements)
Art: 10 ("I DO" yelled Sam, "I do like green eggs and ham!")
Sound: 7 (overly silent at times, but dialog helps lot)
Character: 9 (So simple yet very complex, a must see)
Enjoyment: 10 (Felt like a 3-hour summer blockbuster movie)

anime viewer might be a little turned off from this show. At first glance for me I quickly turned it away as I thought it was aimed toward children. Despite showing an R+ rating I also notice ratings are usually 20% correct in the MAL database.
But after pushing it aside for about two weeks, I finally decided to give it a shot and boy will you be surprised. Right off the start, you're heart will start racing as you follow the story of the main character. A after waking up from a daze, blade runner 'esque chase quickly follows. After the action, the main character appears to be very lost, which I'm sure most of you will feel the same way he does. This also starts a unique connection and experience between the viewer and the main character. This is where the show really starts.
One thing I'm sure most people will notice is the art style. You will either love it or hate it but don't let the artwork turn you away from this show. After an episode or two you will most likely appreciate the level of originality this art style brings to the plate. After i have seen over 100+ series in a three month span, this was a very welcome change to the orthodox anime styles. Dont let the simple look fool you as well, there are more than enough small details to pay attention to throughout. From the tiny memory pellets to an overcrowded storage room. Everything looks very thought out and amazing. Often you'll probably think to yourself, how the hell does Misaaki and Nobutaka make this ***t up?
Another false assumption was that the characters were mostly children since they have a simple child like look to them. But they are very much mature adults. The characters are are all so very likable and I owe a lot of that to the art style and the small details that they do or don't leave out. The even greater point is how Masaaki Yuasa goes to great depths to control the viewers emotions with the use of these characters. One minute, you'll hate a character, then the next you'll feel sorry for them, then you'll feel frustrated because this is almost an emotional roller coaster. Rest assured, this is a good kind of frustration (if there is such a thing).
Defintiely "don't judge this book by its cover." This point of view story was rather an interesting one and the science, technology, and hierarchy surrounding this universe was very captivating experience. There are quite a large number of allusions and ideals in every episode that got me reflecting on what I have just experienced (which I absolutely love). I can't really compare this to any other anime show. If i had to compare the story to something, it like a telling of a blade runner/ matrix story in the eyes of Dr. Seuss.
A great way to close this epic show would be a quote from Dr. Seuss' Yertle the Turtle:
"You hush your mouth!" Howled the Mighty King Yertle.
"You have no right to talk to the world's highest turtle.
"I rule from the clouds, over land, over sea!
There is no nothing, NOTHING, that's higher than me!"

Overview:
Hot take! Kaiba is overrated as fuck! In all seriousness, Kaiba is actually a pretty good anime. The animation is stunning and the character designs are wonderfully unique. However, I wasn't a huge fan of the series from a writing standpoint and I don't believe it's one Yuasa's best works. Honestly, I liked Lu Over the Wall more than I liked Kaiba. I liked Kick-Heart more than I liked Kaiba. Cat Soup? Yep, it's still better than Kaiba.
The story of Kaiba is told in an almost maddeningly confusing manner, but it's actually pretty simple. People are now able to store their memories in little

flash drives and switch from body to body. People can also erase bad memories and download happy memories that belonged to other people. The wealthy use this technology to keep switching bodies and live forever, while the poor sell their bodies for money. The poor are told that they will be stored on a flash drive and their families will one day be able to get them a robot body, but typically their memories are just erased and they're killed off. The poor live on shitty planets and the wealthy live on super ritzy planets that are inaccessible to everyone else.
All of these are supposed to be mind blowing, incredible plot points, but everything in Kaiba is a well recycled Science Fiction trope. The story is basically just a shitty Metropolis, but doesn't say anything new about the evils of wealth inequality or social stratification. Hell, it says far less than Metropolis did 90 years ago! Evil rich guys switching bodies didn't start with Get Out. It was done in B-movies way back in the early 60s like "Frankenstein Must be Destroyed!" How about the part with downloading happy memories and deleting bad ones? That was done in Total Recall. Also known as Ah-nold und zee sree boobs! Back around 10 years ago there was a shitty action movie with Justin Timberlake called "In Time". In that movie, poor people have to sell years off their life to wealthy people, who accumulate time until they can live basically forever. It may have 30% on Rotten Tomatoes, but it was just as deep and profound as anything I personally found in fucking Kaiba.
Maybe the problem is with me. Other people watched Kaiba and got something meaningful out of it. That's awesome! More power to those people. I've heard frequently that it's all about the importance of memories and how we should cherish all our memories including the bad ones. I mean...yeah. My grandmother has dementia. Of course I cherish my memories and fear losing them. I don't personally consider that a profound lesson, but that's just me.
I've also read this series is a love letter to Osamu Tezuka. Seriously?! Of course I can't speak for Yuasa. Maybe he really said that in an interview. Personally , I have my doubts. Mr. Yuasa loves animation as a concept, but has never displayed a real love for "anime" as non-Japanese know it. I don't think there's an otaku bone in that man's body. There's a quote falsely attributed to Alan Moore that says "I don't make comics. Those are garbage for children. I make graphic novels". While Moore never said anything like this, I could absolutely picture Yuasa saying "anime is trash. I make artsy cartoons!" I'm supposed to believe that anime's greatest outlier, who spent his entire career being as un-anime as humanly possible decided to make a Tezuka tribute? I'm calling bullshit.
The character designs are pretty awesome...mostly. Then there's this flying booger named Hyo-Hyo that never ceases to be obnoxious. Navi from Zelda would make up excuses not to hang out with Hyo-Hyo. Then we have this weird black caricature with fat, blue lips and a bulging tumor on his forehead. Oh and his name is Vanilla. God damn it Yuasa. What the fuck were you thinking?
We all love Yuasa. However, I feel the man is much more comfortable as an artist than as a writer. His best works are Ping Pong, Tatami, and Night is Short, which were all adaptations. When Yuasa does the writing, we end up with stuff like Cat Soup. I was disappointed by Kaiba, but I'm glad other people love it. Now go and spread that love by fixing the fan wikia! As of the time of this review, the wikia is barren and has had zero effort put into it, as if nobody actually gives a shit about this series. The Wikipedia page is also a near stub and lacks basic episode summaries! There are 30,000 people just here on MAL who would say "I LOVE Kaiba! I don't just include it in my favorites to look smart!". One you guys please go fix this.

I’m going to discuss Kaiba in terms of the three modes of persuasion: ethos (persuasion through presentation), logos (logical persuasion), and pathos (emotional persuasion). I do this, because the fact that Kaiba is very uninteresting to me is ironically very interesting to me.
Regarding ethos:
I felt secondhand embarrassment watching Kaiba, because I’ve made art like Kaiba before: Art that is so serious and earnest yet so unimportant. Kaiba is an entirely serious show, but I could not take it seriously. The biggest problem, in my opinion, drives the anime so much further down than any of its “minor” shortcomings and cliches (information being withheld, inexhaustible flashbacks,
...
spoon-feeding the plot to the audience, guns that fail to work only against important characters, songs that try hard to evoke melodrama, characters with simple motivations in service of the plot [this is not a character-driven story, which makes it a little less interesting imo]). The biggest problem is so much worse than any of those mediocre story-telling devices. It is the unshakable nature of the anime being completely serious, unironic, and unapologetic in its attempt to wow and move the audience using very insubstantial drama and minimally explored themes (of memory chips, replaceable bodies, human nature, capitalism, and globalization). Most of the characters being one-dimensional (had a few traits each) and acting like children (suitable and reminiscent of kids shows) did not help matters.
Regarding logos:
The “sci-fi” (science-fiction) tag is truly the most enigmatic scrawl I’ve had the prerogative to investigate. I used to think that only the highest of stories deemed scientifically plausible would be conferred this emblem of intellectual creativity; I was quickly proven wrong as I noticed that some sci-fi are almost completely implausible, or at least, grossly speculative and without a single line of justification. I decided then that there must be a spectrum, a scale, as with most things, on which some sci-fi are more science and some more fiction. Today, I disagree with both of those past stances. I now think that all sci-fi contain some speculative elements and some realistic elements, and, in effect, concede that every sci-fi is indeed unrealistic, which is why they are called “sci-fi” and not “hyper-realistic stories containing only currently available technologies.” To put it simply, all sci-fi contain unexplainable phenomena that may or may not come to exist in the future.
However, some sci-fi really stretch the boundaries of its genre. I’ve noticed that anime in particular often does this, where borderline fantasy is often either tagged as or mistaken for potential future technology/circumstances. Kaiba is one of those anime. How? As Charlie would say: You do the math.
I’m kidding. I’ll do the math. In Kaiba, rich people buy poor people’s bodies. That will not happen in our world. And I don’t mean human trafficking or smuggling organs. I mean rich people transplanting their memories into poor people; this will not happen. For countless logical, medical, ethical and legal reasons, rich people will instead artificially design or request the most efficient bodies from tightly controlled labs with scientists and AI smarter than we can imagine. Kaiba, in that sense, is completely irrelevant to reality if it seriously means to be sci-fi. Besides some symbolic value or being a mental exercise in futility, Kaiba is valueless in terms of being a sci-fi, void of any logical merits.
I’ve resigned myself to the fact that I’ve gathered absolutely nothing new or complex from this anime that I haven’t thought or known about already, despite my dire efforts to derive from the anime any food for thought.
Regarding pathos:
I’m the kind of person who becomes teary-eyed watching anything the slightest bit sad, and yet, I only teared up during this anime from the stress induced by the fact that the anime said near nothing despite being so stressfully fast-paced. It rather reminded me of The Tatami Galaxy.
About Chroniko’s story: I was sad and really almost cried. But I was also mighty bored. I am sorry (to the animators who tried hard), but each of the sob stories were so standard and cliched that my mind gnawed at itself in boredom. I understand that Chroniko’s story is a real world problem, however. I think that it is an IMPORTANT theme, but it wasn't any radical or deep one, just like every other theme in the show.
Ultimately, I award Kaiba with its extra score (2 instead of 1) for having allowed this self-analysis. I’ve wondered before why some stories don’t engage me. It was especially puzzling this time because I love sci-fi. I understand a bit better now.

《海马》（日语：カイバ）是一部日本电视动画原创作品。2008年4月到7月于WOWOW上放映。全12话。作品名称“海马”引自与脑器官相关的“海马体”。与汤浅政明的前作一样，画风以及人物设计与手冢治虫相近。
第12回日本文化厅媒体艺术祭动画部门优秀赏作品。
作品简介[编辑]
由于记忆可以被储存，肉体的死亡不再具有意义。由于记忆可以在不同身体中转移，发生许多社会现象，像是记忆的买卖、违法的记忆改造、偷取他人的记忆。社会混乱，进步停滞。丧失的自己记忆的主角凯巴在这样的社会里寻找自己原来的记忆。

不善言词的主角。Kaiba的胸部有一个洞，以及由三个圆形为顶点形成的三角形花纹。在动画一开始时，他没有任何记忆。

Kaiba (カイバ) is a Japanese science fiction anime television series produced by Madhouse. The series is created, written, and directed by Masaaki Yuasa, it was broadcast for 12 episodes on WOWOW from April to July 2008. In North America, the series is licensed by Discotek Media. The story revolves around an enigmatic character named Warp, and takes place in a strange world mixed with a universe where changing bodies and trafficking memories are possible.
In 2008, Kaiba won the Excellence Award at the 12th Japan Media Arts Festival.
Synopsis[edit]
Setting[edit]
In Kaiba's universe, memories can be stored as information via a memory chip; when individuals die, their minds live on. This digitization of mental information allows for the transfer of one's mind to someone else's body, and the theft and manipulation of other people's memories has become the norm. Society is largely divided into two classes. In the skies are electrical storms, which cannot be passed through without losing one's memories. Above them lies the realm of the wealthy and powerful, who barter others' bodies and memories for their own enjoyment and longevity. Below the clouds is a troubled and dangerous world where good bodies are hard to come by and real money is scarce.
Plot[edit]
The series begins with a man named Kaiba (Warp) as he awakens in a ruined room. He has no memories, but he has a hole in his chest, a triangular mark on his stomach, and a pendant with a picture of an unknown girl inside. After being attacked, Kaiba escapes with the help of an unknown ally and, through his travels, slowly regains his memories. Meanwhile, the woman from the pendant struggles with her own convictions and her past, which may be intertwined with Kaiba's origins.

Kaiba (カイバ) or Warp (ワープ, Wāpu)
Voiced by: Houko Kuwashima
A man who does not speak very much. He has a hole in the middle of his chest and a tattoo of three circles forming a triangle on his stomach. At the beginning of the show, he has no memories he can access.
Neiro (ネイロ)
Voiced by: Mamiko Noto
A woman who shares an unknown connection with Kaiba. In the beginning, little is known about her, although she is currently under the care of Popo. A broadcast reports about a "memory tank" exploding, releasing thousands of memories into space in the form of orange egg capsules; it is believed that Neiro is responsible for this incident.
Popo (ポポ)
Voiced by: Romi Park
Popo is the first to encounter Kaiba upon awakening. After crossing paths with him again, he explains to Kaiba the nature of the current world, and that his life is in danger. Giving him the temporary name "Warp", Popo smuggles him onto the freight ship Neuron while creating a diversion for him to escape from Mantle, a man who is after Kaiba's special body.
Dada-sama (ダダ様)
The shady man behind Issoudan (lit. One Mind Society), regarded as a near-religious figure by its members; however, Popo is not as reverent. Later in the series, it is revealed that Dada-sama is actually three different people in aged Warp clones, working to take back the throne from the original Warp.
Vanilla (バニラ, Banira)
Voiced by: Hisao Egawa
The sheriff on board the ship Neuron. Though Vanilla is extremely strict and often sadistic in enforcing his authority, and enjoys doing so thoroughly, he is willing to make deals, accept bribery, and/or steal memory chips for himself. He also has a weakness for extremely cute girls. He has a crush on Chroniko (which, in actuality, is Kaiba in Chroniko's body) and goes to great lengths to ensure her/his safety. This devotion comes to a head when the two are on the run from higher authorities. While fleeing, he transfers Kaiba's and Hyo-Hyo's memories elsewhere as their ship is under bombardment, knowing well that they would be unable to escape, and tells Chroniko that he had back up bodies elsewhere to comfort her/him. However, after making sure that Chroniko (Kaiba)'s memories are safe, it is revealed that there was no such insurance, and perishes alongside Chroniko's body when the ship is destroyed.
Kaba (カバ)
A stuffed animal-like body that resembles a hippo. Kaiba uses this body to smuggle himself in the ship. It is very difficult for him to move around in this state, and he is also incapable of speech or expressing facial emotion. While using Chroniko's body, Kaiba also makes use of the hippo body when he doesn't feel like being harassed or chased after by Vanilla. Despite its status as a substitute, Kaiba has an attachment towards it, and shows a brief moment of grief when it is destroyed.
Hyo-Hyo (ひょーひょー, Hyōhyō)
Voiced by: Wasabi Mizuta
A small intelligent creature that accompanies Kaiba after flying aboard the ship. It cannot speak intelligible language (though it does have a voice) and it flies around, spinning its two antennae like propeller blades to float. Hyo-Hyo goes to great lengths to make sure Kaiba avoids capture. It is revealed near the end of the series that due to Kichi's displeasure at being ordered by Popo modify Neiro's memories, he backed up Neiro's original, un-altered memories in Hyo-Hyo. Thus, Hyo-Hyo was actually Neiro trying to help Kaiba remember his memories and who she is. However, by the end, Neiro and Hyo-Hyo have experienced a completely different series of events, creating two people from one, and prompting the question of which is the "real" Neiro.
Chroniko (クロニコ, Kuroniko), alternatively spelled Cronico
Voiced by: Chiwa Saitō
A girl Kaiba meets during a stop Neuron makes. She sells her body (literally) so that the money can support her family and hopes that someday her family will become wealthy enough to buy her a new body in the future. However, she is killed by a corrupt doctor (by simply releasing her mind rather than putting it in a chip and sending it to her family), and her body is sold anyway. Before her body is taken by buyers, Hyo-Hyo places Kaiba's mind inside her body, and Kaiba uses this disguise to avoid capture and get back aboard Neuron.
Paru (パル), alternatively spelled Pal
An ostrich-like creature who saves Kaiba. It is revealed that Paru contains the memories of Kaiba's mother.
Release[edit]
Kaiba was produced by Madhouse and directed by Masaaki Yuasa. Yuasa also wrote the screenplay, while the character design was made by Nobutaka Ito. The series was broadcast from April 10 to July 24, 2008, in WOWOW.[2][3] The title "Kaiba" refers to the brain's memory-related organ hippocampus.[4]
The anime series was licensed in Australia by Siren Visual in 2011. In September 2017, Discotek Media announced they would be licensing the show for physical distribution in North America. In 2022, Anime Limited licensed it in the United Kingdom.[5][6][7][8] It was made available for streaming on Crunchyroll in May 2019.[9]

Reception[edit]
Kaiba was awarded the Excellence Award in the Animation Division at the 12th Japan Media Arts Festival in 2008.[11][12]
THEM Anime Reviews gave the series 4 out of 5 stars, and praised the anime for its outstanding animation, story and visuals, saying, "Visually, Kaiba excites. It is certainly soft on the eye and the art style leaves the animators open to draw some incredibly evocative backdrops for the worlds that our lead visits and sees.
